Oracle Announces Java SE Subscriptions

Donald Smith from Oracle’s Java Platform Group announces Java SE Subscriptions in a recent blog post.  Key points point for security as I see them …

Patching support
Developers are allergic to upgrades unless the new software provides useful features.  Businesses on the other hand, require secure software.  Long term support provides a to keep old versions of Java up to date with recent security fixes.

Easier bar for entry
“Desktop pricing is $2.50 per user per month, or lower with tiered volume discounts. Processor pricing for use on Servers and/or Cloud deployments is $25.00 per month or lower.”  Small price to pay to keep your servers secure if your allergic to upgrades.

As Donald mentions in his blog, Oracle  made a number of improvements to release cadence and moving Oracle JDK to be more like OpenJDK.  Read the article if you want the details, the move to OpenJDK is old news but what you may not realize is that Oracle JDK will be supported for a long time.
